Construction on Walnut Street began this week to reopen the road as a two-way street from 3rd to 5th Street through City Market. All City Market shops and restaurants in the area will remain open during construction, and there will be minimal impact to City Market parking during the process. Additionally, KC Streetcar operations will not be affected by construction.
The project is expected to wrap up next spring and improvements include:
— a new roadway opened to two-way traffic
— a new pedestrian plaza and seating area
— and new City Market signage.
Walnut will continue to close to vehicular traffic on weekends during the Farmers Market. Vehicles will have access during the week and on weekend evenings.
“The goals of this project are to provide better access and visibility for businesses, improve traffic flow in City Market, and promote a pedestrian friendly environment. We are excited for the outcome,” said Claude Page, Senior Planner with the City Planning and Development Department.
This project is a partnership between the KCMO Public Works and City Planning and Development Departments, Port KC and City Market. Funding is provided by special obligation bonds.
PARKING DURING THE PROJECT
Access to free parking in City Market Square will be available throughout construction with entry from 5th or 3rd Streets depending on the progress of the project. Directional signage will be posted to guide traffic to additional parking lots. Parking staff will be present to help direct traffic during busy times.
